Peers Assisting With Services

                                                                     PAWS

Peers Assisting With Services (PAWS) is a student driven volunteer program at Hewitt
Trussville Middle School (HTMS) since fall 2006.  The PAWS program is a registered
member of the Points of Light Foundation Kids Care Clubs.   Each student participating
in PAWS is registered with Points of Light.  Thus, the students will be able to accumulate
volunteer hours throughout their school career at Trussville.  They will receive recognition
through the Points of Light Foundation in the form of a lapel pin, letter from the President
of the United States, and a certificate of participation.  Levels of recognition are based on
hours logged in each student’s name.

Many colleges and universities place weighted emphasis on community service through
volunteer activities.  By serving others, students develop positive self esteem, as well as
learn many life lessons.  Also, through these experiences, students are influenced
toward good citizenship decisions.  Hopefully, through these experiences, the student
will continue to make civic contributions throughout life.  HTMS PTA wants to provide
opportunities for students meeting the following objectives:

  • Teach students about compassion, social responsibility, and each student’s
    ability to make a difference
  • Help students promote values of compassion through hands-on service projects
  • Foster a desire to serve, aid and care for peers and fellow man

PAWS PROGRAM DETAILS

  • Students volunteer their time assisting others in the community.
  • After a student participates in a service activity, the student MUST complete a
PAWS Hours Record Form. The form MUST be signed by the event
coordinator/chaperone.  The form should be turned into the HTMS Office.
  • A PTA member will collect the submitted forms from the HTMS Office. The service
hours will be logged monthly into each individual student account.
  • Opportunities for service will be emailed monthly to the parents of the registered
PAWS participants, as well as posted on the HTMS website.

We encourage your consideration and participation in this worthwhile program.  People
in the community may also contact HTMS PTA via email with requests for service
opportunities. If further information about the program is needed, please contact
Stephanie DeRieux at sed_turtle@yahoo.com.
